Chez Rene Socca
Frenchriviera
Chez Rene Socca is the ultimate in casual dining and comfort food. Queue up for the famous Socca - a kind of pancake made with chick pea flour and olive oil and pan fried with other local delicacies such as pizzaladiere - an onion tart with anchovies and olives, stuffed vegetables, fried courgette flowers and a local dessert 'Tarte aux Blettes Sucrees' a spinach or Swiss chard and pine nut tart dressed with icing sugar which can only be described as an 'acquired taste'.
The place is charming and the food is very traditional, peasant food but an experience none the less. The Socca is delicious - a sort of flat yorkshire pudding that is cooked in a huge skillet and hacked up in front of you depending on how many portions you require. A top tip, don't over order as the food is incredibly filling.
Once you've got your food you need to find a seat which can be difficult in the height of summer, then a waiter will find you and bring you drinks - it's all finger food so there's no cutlery to be found anywhere. It's all very relaxed and the perfect place to stop and sample the local fare. They also make fabulous wood fired pizzas, even more evidence of their close cultural ties to the flavours of Italy.
